When times get tough, Rotary gets tougher!

By popular request- here is a glimpse into our wonderful West Kauai Rotary Club!

First order of business today was to officially induct Bill Facker and welcome him as our newest member! 

Then we talked about our current and upcoming projects:

Spencer Schmidt shared his uplifting experience at St. Theresa School when he and two other Rotarians distributed personal dictionaries to the third grade students as part of our Literacy Project. Dictionaries will be distributed to three more schools in the next few weeks.

Dave Walker reported that our grassing project at Waimea Canyon Park soccer field will start on the mauka side where a sprinkler system is already installed so we can proceed without the need of District Simplified Grant funds.

We are still looking for a venue for our annual Kachi Kachi dance as the Hanapepe Neighborhood Center is booked through the month of November.
Also in November- we will honor a firefighter as part of our island-wide Rotary recognition of those who serve the public.
And we will host a birthday party at the transition housing shelter in Lihue.

Larry Groenleer announced that the annual turkey distribution will take place at the Salvation Army on November 20 starting at 9:30AM. Rotary volunteers will help carry turkeys for over a hundred senior citizens and needy families.

Today I received an email from Kina through our Rotary website. She is a VISTA volunteer serving at Eleele School. She was in need of volunteer services so I invited her to our meeting tonight as our guest. Kina was able to share some very good information about herself, the VISTA program and the needs at Eleele School. Our club will be able to assist her and also recommended other organizations like the JROTC at Waimea High School.



Club member, County Council candidate and Watershed Council member Rhoda Libre shared news about the brand new Hawaii Ocean Resources Plan that will greatly impact shoreline setbacks throughout the islands and address the effects of the environmental changes affecting our oceans.

 

Club member and President of the Kauai Island Utilities Co-op Randy Hee was our featured speaker and informed us of the new renewable energy initiatives taking place around the state and some of the new technologies in power generation and distribution that are being implemented.

All in all, this was a very interesting meeting and our members lingered long after the regular closing time to continue to discuss these interesting topics and enjoy Rotary fellowship!
