High Wind Watch WARNING

Due to the high wind warning in effect through 6 p.m. tomorrow, public and charter schools on Kaua‘i, Ni‘ihau, O‘ahu and Moloka‘i will be closed, officials said.

Emergency shelter managers are on standby should the need to open a shelter arise, a county news release states.

The Kaua‘i Civil Defense Agency has partially activated the Emergency Operation Center and first responders are on standby.

On Kaua‘i, the strongest winds are expected over the central mountains and north through east coastal sections. Northwest winds are expected to reach 25 mph with higher gusts Friday night. North winds 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts on Saturday.

The front is expected to reach Kaua‘i around sunrise Friday morning.

A high surf warning is in effect for 20- to 30-foot surf along north- and west-facing shores through early Saturday.

Average amounts of rainfall are forecast up to 1⁄2 inch tonight. Average amounts 1⁄2 to 1 inch Friday and locally higher amounts up to 2 inches with frontal passage. Less than 1⁄4 inch Friday night and Saturday.

+++++
Statement as of 7:07 AM HST on January 15, 2009

A high wind watch remains in effect from 6 PM HST this evening
through Friday afternoon.

Winds on Kauai and Oahu will gradually increase today... with wind
gusts of 50 to 60 mph possible tonight and Friday. The strongest
wind gusts are expected over the high terrain and across
communities north and east of high terrain.

A high wind watch means there is the potential for a hazardous
high wind event. Sustained winds of at least 40 mph... or gusts of
58 mph are possible... but not yet certain. Continue to monitor
the latest forecasts.

You can see the chaff on the Doppler radar. The fuzzy green area south of Kauai is sea spray caused by winds.

so far so good. It is not quite 11 pm Thursday, and there is only a breeze in Foster Village near Aloha Stadium. No strong wind yet.

I wonder if the company scheduled to remove my tree stumps tomorrow will postpone the job.

It's been breezy all along and seems to be picking up a little now. My friends at Civil Defense said we should be feeling it around midnight.

I woke up with a pounding headache a few minutes ago. The is a solid, gusty wind whipping around now. Not much rain yet.

It is past 7:30 am Friday. No wind. But it rained last night and still looks overcast.

The crew will come here to remove my tree stumps as scheduled.
