"Green" Beauty
Kauai's albizia trees are pretty amazing.
A few years ago, a large albizia log was turned into a canoe by a master carver in Waimea.
A decade ago, Hawaiian Mahogany planted a million trees to not only remove carbon dioxide out of our air and produce oxygen, but also to provide biomass for an upcoming alternative energy project, fertilize nearby hardwood trees with its nitrogen fixing qualities, be incorporated into livestock feed and to be turned into usable lumber.
This evening, my friend Bill Cowern and his friend Bill, made my wish for a new dining table and benches a reality.
I didn't know what to expect. Earpod? Monkeypod? Mango? Norfolk Island Pine?
WOW- the first experimental pieces of furniture created by Hawaiian Mahogany out of albizia! This is a totally "green" product- treated in mineral baths that make the wood bug and termite proof and suitable for indoor or outdoor use! Bill says that it is also compostable at the end of its practical life.
Kauai's ultimate recyclable, self-sustainable, power-generating, self-fertilizing, carbon fixing albizia is also a thing of practical beauty,
Mahalo nui loa, Bill!

Mahalo, koakane!
WOW! Beautiful work. Simple and understated. Dense wood, too! I like the part about making use of the land with something other than more homes.
Awesome!
Beautiful! And here, I was planning to buy a folding table from Costco. Cannot compare with what you have.
Ah, well, we already have a teak dining table. The folding table is for extra guests.
David loves the look and feel of wood.
This wood is very light- in color and weight. Yet very tough. In 10 years you have a tree that can provide lumber already. That is why is is so "renewable". Plus, it serves as fertilizer for the hardwood trees grown around it.
Its beauty as a wood for furniture comes after the treatment. We are all interested to see if it will get lighter or darker with age.
