Rotary Gives (and Gets!)
What a day! I was up and at it with my Willie Kalikimaka CD ringing in the holidays for the Kauai Salvation Army at the Waimea Big Save store. When Spencer and Tucker's shift started, I caught up with Rotary Santa and the Gifts for Grands gang at the kupuna care homes.
After a brief nap, it was time to put the finishing touches on our float (which is actually a Kikiaola Construction Co. high forklift). Rhoda Libre (Hawaii Warrior Daniel Libre's auntie) was on hand to help before she assumed her parade emcee duties.
Kudos to Past-President and current Community Service Chair Dave Walker who made the arrangements for our bell-ringing and the Food Bank, here with Chef Martina and my #3 son who was a big part of the fish net effort! AND BIGGEST MAHALO to Past President Mike Faye who spearheaded the float project and made it happen from concept to actually driving the parade route! Our float was followed by the Kauai Food Bank van and our club members walked the parade with candy for keiki and fish nets for donations to the Food Bank.
Wow! All I can say is that Waimea Light Parade watchers are teaching their keiki how to share! In that short period of time, our fishnets brought in over $1200 for the Kauai Food Bank. It was also great to renew friendship with the Champions- who were a big part of my Man of La Mancha production experience!
At parade's end, I ran into Auntie Darla, whose son Jordon Dizon is playing his rookie year for the Detroit Lions. Lastly- I have to recognize our Rotary Santa whose presence in the day's activities was enhanced by Mokihana Ruiz's hand-made Santa Suit. MAHALO to all who gave so GENEROUSLY on this very special West Kauai Rotary day!

Wow, what a day, huh? Congratulations!
Where did you get the Korean flag?
Great pic of you ringing the bells next to the SA kettle.
I especially liked the pic of the Santa. He looked the part and the costume was well-made.
When I was at the mall yesterday, I saw 2 men holding "homeless" signs. I gave one some money; the other guy was on the other side of the street. I am surprised that more people are not holding those signs, especially during this period of high unemployment.
Hi gigi! the Korean flag and all the others were ordered by one of our members from an online flag specialty company.
The International President of Rotary this year is from Korea. His theme "Make Dreams Real" and our Hawaii District Governor's encouragement to "think globally and act locally" were the inspiration for us to perform services that promoted global awareness and were of direct and instant benefit to organizations that provide services to our people.
Liz ~ I'm amazed at the amount of money the flood ravaged community of Waimea was able to donate in food and cash.
I had a similar experience on the ceded lands of Kaupe'a. I could not believe all the cans of food we collected for the Hawaii Food Bank.
In 1983 when my daughter attended Moanalua HS, she worked as a volunteer at Hawaii Food Bank. They had a small portion of a warehouse then. Now! It's a huge operation with 5 times the space. Tells you where we've gone in 25 years, huh?
The "Iniki Effect" is renewed with every disaster on Kauai. We received SO MUCH assistance after Iniki! Kauai people feel the need to "give back" no matter how little they have to share.
The rubber meets the road with the Food Bank and the Salvation Army who do the grunt jobs in the trenches 24/7/365. Our people know this and appreciate it!
