Piping the Sunset
Tomorrow- Saturday, February 7, 2009, the Rotary Club of West Kauai will once again honor the poet Robert Burns with a traditional Scottish Supper celebration, Kauai style.
To thank the Rotary members who worked hard to set up the Waimea Plantation Cottages luau grounds, two of the pipers ascended to the Waimea Town Lookout and played for all in the valleys to hear at sunset.

That was nice. From the Highlands to the high lands. Have to say, though, I never in all my years in music performance would have paired the pipes with Hawai'i Aloha.
Nope. Never. Not-at-all. Not even close.
Still. Very recognizable and, yes, I did sing along.

It is a Scottish melody- and that is why it can be played on the pipes. ;-)
It is not so much the combination of the melody and pipes as it is the combination of the lyrics and language, and pipes.
Kind of like hearing Sukiyaki on the pipes.
Ahh. and that's a sweet sound, laddie...
Until we started doing this regularly, I did not realize that there are only 9 notes in a bagpipe scale.
The Scots are a big part of our community history here. If not for the Sinclairs who came in the mid 1800's, West Kauai and Niihau might not have been so well-preserved.
